Hoping for sweet success

A YOUNG Thai boxer is looking to become a knock-out hit after being selected to represent Great Britain at a prestigious world tournament in October.

Abdul Muizz Khan’s classmates and teachers at Freehold Community School are backing their young starlet by raising money to pay for his flights to Benidorm for the United World Youth Muay Thai and Kickboxing Championships from October 28 to November 3.

The school has been selling cakes and other goodies to help raise the cash.

The 11-year-old, who trains at Marvin Greaves’ gym, on Bourne Street, Hollinwood, has already competed in the British Championships.

Abdul, who lives in Werneth, thanked his classmates for their fund-raising efforts and expressed his excitement at representing his country.

He said: “I am getting more confident each time I fight.

“I would like to thank my family for all their help and support over the past couple of years.

“I would also like to thank school for helping me raise money for my first competition abroad, representing Great Britain at the world finals in Spain.”

Deputy headteacher Debra Warren praised Abdul’s talents and wished him luck for the championships.

She said: “We are very proud of Abdul. He is so hard-working and modest about his obvious talent that when we found out how successful and talented he is at Thai boxing we were more than happy to support him.”
