Running marathons usually takes years of dedicated training and endurance running.

But Chadderton’s Paul Corrigan took only 10 months to go from novice to marathon-ready - spurred by a cause close to his heart

The 35 year old had taken part in the Manchester 10K and never run for sport before he signed up for London Marathon. The foster-carer was inspired to run the 26.2 mile course to raise money for Leukaemia Care after seeing its work for his friend David Kenyon.

The married father-of-one said: “I’d always seen the London Marathon advertised and each year I said I’d do it. Then when my mate was diagnosed with leukaemia and underwent treatment two years ago, it gave me the perfect cause.

“Dave had a horrific time and spent many months in hospital but he has now come through the other side and is in remission.”

After taking part in the Manchester 10k, Paul signed up for the London event and gave himself less than a year to train.

He said: “A runner friend told me that it takes three years to properly be prepared for a marathon but I had 10 months. Training was very tough and I picked up a few injuries along the way, but I was determined to see it though.

“On the day I loved it: the first 20 miles were a lot easier than you think, mainly because of the atmosphere and the crowd.

“I’m delighted that I’ve so far raised over £2,600 for the charity, and money is still coming in.”
