NHS can be streets ahead says TV’s Sally

FORMER Coronation Street star Sally Lindsay shared details of the traumatic birth of her twins as she joined the Labour campaign trail in Oldham yesterday.

Sally visited Tommyfield Market with Oldham East and Saddleworth candidate Debbie Abrahams and shadow health secretary Andy Burnham.

She said the treatment she received following an emergency Caesarean section five years ago would have cost her £35,000 if it hadn’t been for the NHS.

She added: “The care and attention they gave me was second to none. I didn’t get that care because I was on the telly — everyone gets that care. “

UKIP were accused of going “beyond the gutter and into the sewer” as Oldham went to the polls.

A leaflet published by UKIP candidate Joe Fitzpatrick — standing in St James ward — labels current council leader Jim McMahon as an “arrogant, self-obsessed young man” who needs to be “removed from power for the common good”.

McMahon, who is fighting to retain his Failsworth East seat, is accused of wasting £150 million of Oldhamers’ money with “pet projects” such as the old town hall development, the new sports centre, a new Coliseum theatre and the arrival of Marks & Spencer.

Councillor McMahon said: “Fight us on our policies rather than attempting to blacken someone’s character. Joe Fitzpatrick and his supporting group are the worst of Oldham politics. They move from different political parties trying to find a comfortable home for their brand of campaigning, which goes beyond gutter politics into the sewer.”

Mr Fitzpatrick — who left the Labour party five years ago following a high-profile court case which saw former MP Phil Woolas ousted from his Oldham East and Saddleworth seat — also came under fire last year for publishing a UKIP leaflet which lampooned postal vote fraud.
