Tale of a chippy tea

A DOBCROSS eatery will be the waterside setting for Marsden-based Mikron Theatre Company’s latest tale.

“One of Each” is about the nation’s favourite dish - fish and chips - and will be performed outside the Limekiln Cafe, which will be open for business before and after the show.

The unique touring company — which in the summer tours by narrowboat and is renowned for staging shows at unusual locations — promises stormy seas, saucy secrets and bitter sibling rivalry in the savoury story, which unwraps the history of fish and chips and why they’ve become so iconic.

The play is the latest by award-winning playwright and actress Deborah McAndrew: “It’s always a lot of fun writing for Mikron, but working on One of Each has been a real labour of love,” said Deborah.

“Fish and chips are full of nostalgia, right up until the present. It’s still a Friday family treat, but more evocative are the memories of childhood holidays; walking down the promenade at dusk, the sound and smell of the sea and the wind cooling my supper. If heaven exists, that’s what it is — hot, salty, seaside fish and chips.”

The audience is advised to bring British summer evening essentials of sunscreen, sunglasses - and waterproofs and wellies, blankets... and their own chairs. Admission will be by collection after the show - but if you want to eat, you need to book ahead (01457 871051).

The show will also be performed at the Same Yet Inn in Simister Lane, Prestwich on May 16 (1pm).
