A PROUD Oldhamer rubbed shoulders with the stars when he claimed the highest honour in scouting at Windsor Castle.

Tom Upton — Oldham’s first Queen’s Scout for 20 years — got the chance to meet celebrity survival expert Bear Grylls at the annual St George’s Day parade.

Tom, from 20th Oldham, was one of the Uppermill group’s original cubs when they set up 10 years ago.

Rewarded for his contribution to scouting, Tom has volunteered as a young leader at 20th Oldham since he was 14, and became its cubs leader in January.

“Scouting has been a big part of my life since I was eight,” he said. “Scouting has allowed me to meet lots of other young people with similar interests and to try new things. This summer I will be volunteering at a scout activity centre in Austria.

“It was a great day at Windsor Castle, especially as chief scout Bear Grylls was present.”

Erica Ryan, 20th Oldham Scout leader said: “Tom has not only got a lot out of scouting, but has also put so much back already, especially in Uppermill.

“Though he is only with us during his gap year before going to Cambridge in the autumn, he has taken to the role brilliantly. Everyone at Uppermill Methodist Church, where 20th Oldham is based, is very proud of his achievements.”
