The Mountain Ash Trophy is one of Saddleworth Golf Club’s top major competitions.

It is played over two rounds of medal competition on separate Saturdays.

Leading after round one on 69 were NJ Hughes and Mark Orem, one more than DJ Smith, Andrew Milnes and D McNeill.

Languishing back in 28th place with 75, and looking to be well out of the mix, was Mark Anderson-Wild.

A week later came one of the greatest comebacks in the competition’s long history, however, when Anderson-Wild posted a superb 73-8-65 to take over at the top of the leaderboard.

He posted an aggregate of 140 to finish ahead of Mark Orme 142, S Goodwin 143 and A Slack and Andy Milnes, both 144.

There was plenty of other action at Saddleworth with a Stableford won by Colin Crowther 41 from Steven Dyson 39 and Darren Smith and Neil Shaw both 37.

A BB Stableford had Paul Rowbotham and Paul Baddeley in charge with 49, three clear of Roger Devy and Les Thompson and ‘Hissing’ Syd Barton and Eddie Hall.

A Turkey Shoot Bogey was won by Joe Ridley and Greg Burgess +13 from James and Adam Slack and Mike Ralph and Ken Mills, both +9.

Saddleworth ladies played a Canadian Greensome with Tracey Gill and Louise Hinchliffe out on their own with 43, five more than Debra Cockburn and Linda Kenworthy.
