Oldham’s primary school kids create ‘Royal Mile’ of bunting for Jubilee

A ‘Royal Mile’ of bunting has been designed by primary schools in Oldham to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

Creative pupils at schools across the borough were tasked with decorating 20 metres of bunting, as part of the Oldham Big Bunting project.

With the support of Oldham Council and Oldham Play Action Group, pupils were provided with bunting, materials, design templates and other Jubilee-themed resources to help with their decorations.

Buntings from across the borough were then combined and are now on display in Oldham town centre in readiness for the borough’s Platinum Jubilee festival over the extended bank holiday weekend.

In one of her first visits as the new Leader of Oldham Council, Councillor Amanda Chadderton visited Bare Trees Primary School in Chadderton to meet some of the children who had taken part in making the bunting.

Cllr Chadderton said: “The creativity shown by Oldham's youngsters who took part in this project has been incredible, and the bunting looks fantastic.

"The children have all done an amazing job and we are very proud of the work they've created, as I'm sure their parents are too.

"I'd encourage everyone to come and have a look at their work during the Platinum Jubilee celebrations.

“It’s great that our schools have been involved in this landmark occasion and I’m sure they will all remember this moment in the many years to come.”

Teacher Laura Burns, from Bare Trees Primary School, added: “It’s been great to have Cllr Chadderton with us and to meet the children, who were all really excited to show off their designs.

“They can’t wait to celebrate the Jubilee and it’s been great for them to be a part of history.”

The bunting is in place throughout Oldham’s Platinum Jubilee Festival, which starts with a parade of light and Jubilee beacon lighting event on Thursday, June 2.

With a special screening of the Queen’s Coronation to follow alongside an array of exciting events across the town centre until Sunday, it’s a celebration not to be missed.
