New library plans approved for high school

Plans for North Chadderton School have been approved

Plans for a new library and canopy walkway at an Oldham high school have been given the green light by planning chiefs.

Officers from Oldham council have approved proposals for building work to take place at North Chadderton School and Sixth Form.

These would see a new library constructed to the west of the main school, near the all-weather pitch, and connected to the school through a new link structure.

The old library in the central part of the main school on the upper ground floor will become a cafe according to the planning documents.

The design and access statement on behalf of the Chadderton Hall Road school states that the new building will be ‘more distinguishable as a destination’.

The library will be a single storey, red brick building, with roof lights providing ventilation and natural lighting.

A wrap around canopy will also be erected around the school building to provide protection from the elements for staff and pupils walking around the existing science block to the southern end of the building beneath it.

The site where the library will be constructed is currently used as a ‘break out area’ for students and to provide access to the building perimeter. 

Last year the council consulted on £3.4m plans to build new facilities at the school which would see it grow by an extra 30 pupils per year group. 

This included the relocation of the existing library, as well as a three storey science block extension, six new science classrooms and two prep rooms.
