IT’S ON AGAIN . . . action from the first fight between Anthony Crolla (right) and Darleys Perez.
NOVEMBER 21 is the likely date for Chadderton’s Anthony Crolla to get a second chance at a world title.
World Boxing Association vice president Gilberto Mendoza yesterday announced “Million Dollar Crolla” was to be granted an immediate rematch following his controversial draw against WBA lightweight title holder Darleys Perez on July 18.
That night, Crolla (28) looked to have beaten champion Perez, but two of the three ringside judges scored the bout level after 12 thrilling rounds, meaning Perez retained his belt.
The result incensed Crolla and his legion of Manchester fans - and WBA chiefs have now agreed the Oldham star deserves another shot.
Crolla’s promoter, Matchroom Boxing chief Eddie Hearn, said last night: “I’m confident the rematch will take place in the UK and we have already had talks with Perez’s promoters for November 21st at the same arena. We are very close to a deal.”
Hearn feels his fighter has been vindicated by the decision to award the rematch: “I don’t think there was one person in the arena who scored the fight for Perez. The deductions during the fight, in Anthony’s favour, made it a clear victory for him.
“It was the public outcry... we’re in an age when social media is available to the boxing fans and they can make their voices heard. The support Anthony got was a huge factor in this decision.”
Crolla himself was clearly relieved to get his second chance at glory.
He tweeted: “Huge thank you for granting me the rematch. Sure me and Darleys Perez can put on another great fight for the title.”
