Professional hitting top form for big occasion

CRICKET: WHEN Geeth Alwis charged down the pitch and gave away his wicket in the Wood Cup quarter-final showdown with Walsden, Royton supporters were not amused.

The Sri Lankan professional could have inflicted terminal damage on Royton’s chances, but fortunately his team-mates bailed him out.

Now Alwis is ready to pay them back with interest. In form with bat and ball, he goes into Sunday’s final brimming with confidence. Skipper Denny Hulme said: “He has been bowling well for quite a while now and we had been expecting him to make a big score for some time.

“He did that with a century in the league in our victory over Walsden on Saturday and it was a quality innings.

“People have not been talking too much about that win with the Wood Cup final coming up, but it was a really great performance. We hammered them and they are top of the league. Geeth is a great pro and a really lovely guy.

“He arrived with a hand injury which prevented him from gripping the ball properly, but that has gone, as his recent bowling figures suggest. And now he has got a big score, too, so that augurs well.”
