FENCING: CHADDERTON-based Marshall Fencing Club members have tasted success at several tournaments.
Fencers headed to the English Youth Championships in Hatfield, Hertfordshire, and returned home with five medals. Leading the way was Ellen Robbins-Wilkinson, who won gold in the girls’ under-13 sabre event. Club-mate Aaliyah Sharplin won the silver.
Eli Bush grabbed a silver in the boys’ under-11 sabre, while James Edwards also finished runner-up in the under-15 age group.
Grace Grimshaw returned home with a bronze medal thanks to a super campaign in the girls’ under-15 sabre competition.
The excellent results at Hatfield followed the efforts at the British Youth Championships, when 37 fencers across 10 age groups qualified for the finals and returned home with 13 medals between them.
Fifteen-year-old Marshall starlet James Edwards was chosen to represent England at the Junior Commonwealth Championships in Capetown, currently taking place.
In the seniors, Marshall coach Michael Swiffin represented England at a veterans’ four-nations tournament in Cardiff, where he won a gold medal.
Meanwhile, Yvonne Walls represented Great Britain in the veterans’ European and World championships in Budapest, and thanks to her excellent performances in Hungary, she has now earned a call-up to the individual world championships in France in November. She also finished runner-up in her category at the British championships.
Club members meet regularly for training at Collective Spirit School, Butterworth Lane in Chadderton.
