NETBALL: OLDHAM Sixth Form College netball team is the best in the North West this season.
The girls have carried all before them, scooping a clutch of awards.
Oldham landed the Northern Conference League title unbeaten by 11 other colleges. They then won the play-offs after first beating Holy Cross (66-30) in the last four, then Winstanley (50-37) in the final.
Oldham represented the North West in the AoC National finals in Bath, where they claimed silver.
But the girls went one better in the AoC National Plate competition as they brushed aside Greenhead IIs 78-20 to net the top prize.
With most of the squad only in their first of two college years, hopes are high for another successful campaign in 2015-16.
College principal Jayne Clarke saluted the team’s performances: “I am enormously proud of the achievements of our team this season. Their commitment across so many competitions has been phenomenal.”
OLDHAM Netball Club player Helen Housby has been selected for England’s preliminary squad for the World Cup.
The shooter, who plays Superleague for Manchester Thunder, is among 17 others battling for a place for the trip to Sydney in August. Black and Yellows team-mate and a former Oldham club player, Sara Bayman, is also among Tracey Neville’s list of hopefuls. The squad will be cut to 12 at the end of June.
