Champions whitewashed by C&R aces

GOLF: CROMPTON and Royton got their Oldham and District Golf League season off to a perfect start by whitewashing reigning champions Ashton.
Rained off on in the opening week, Andy Bottomley’s team were raring to go and used their local knowledge to good effect for an 8-0 scoreline on a windy evening at High Barn Street.
Werneth, also left kicking their heels after rain on week one, will have been pleased to come away from the newly-configured Fairfield course with a share of the points in a 4-4 draw.
It could have been worse for the home side as Dan and Lee Murray came from two down with four to play to claim a last-green win over Adam Rowbotham and Chris Cordwell — shot holes proving crucial.
In the other ‘A’ League East Division game, Garry Smith’s Brookdale claimed a useful 6-2 success over Denton.
Saddleworth ‘A’ were another side to deliver a whitewash scoreline as their 8-0 home win over Blackley propelled them to the top of the West Division.
In the ‘B’ League East, Ashton followed up their opening-day away win with a comfortable 6-2 home victory over Crompton and Royton.
And Fairfield also remain unbeaten after a fine 5-3 success at Werneth.
In the West Division, Oldham and Dukinfield both preserved unbeaten starts, but Dukinfield will have been the happier with a draw at the Lees New Road course.
It’s Stamford who set the early pace with a useful draw at Werneth Low.
