DARTS:
OLDHAM town team ace Mark McGeeney has been selected to represent England at October’s eagerly-anticipated WDF World Cup tournament in Turkey.
County star McGeeney has been in terrific form all season for Oldham in the Lancashire GMC Elite Super Eights, and has been picked for the four-strong men’s team alongside BDO World champion Scott Mitchell (Dorset), Glen Durrant (Cleveland) and Warwickshire’s Jamie Hughes.
Oldham town team spokesman Graham Anderson said: “Everyone connected with Oldham is delighted for Mark. He thoroughly deserves his call-up; we’re all very proud of him.”
Oldham won 8-2 at Chorley in their penultimate Super Eights fixture, putting them seven points clear of second-placed Rochdale. The top two play what promises to be a cracker on the final day of the season.
Against Chorley, Ian Walters topped the team’s three-dart average on the day, recording 94.85 in a 4-1 victory. Dave Airey, Lee Holden, Dave Adshead, Steve Dallimore, Paul Cartwright, Carl Sneyd and David Rawstron also won their games.
The Oldham team has clinched the prestigious Lancashire Cup tournament. After beating Rochdale 4-1, St Helens 4-1, Choley 5-0, and Rochdale Town 4-1, the local lads then saw off Heywood in the final to lift the trophy.
McGeeney finished runner-up in the singles, losing to Newcastle’s Alan Bell in the final despite striking a dream nine-darter during a thrilling match. McGeeney was also out of luck in the doubles competition, as he and Cartwright lost in the final.
