CARNAGE of the run-making variety reigned at Ladhill Lane, where records were broken with a brutal swing of the bat.
Home side Greenfield amassed 433 for four from 45 overs in the Tanner Cup clash. Opponents Shaw, who finished with 10 men, were dismissed for 134.
The statistics from the first-round clash were spectacular. It was the second-highest score in a Saddleworth and District Cricket League match. Heyside hold the record at 473 two years ago. Deputy professional Christi Viljoen set a new Greenfield individual batting record of 183 not out, with 11 fours and 15 sixes in his 115-ball stay.
Alex Peters and Adam Hayes hit 117 and 100 not out respectively. Peters faced 81 deliveries, with 12 fours and eight sixes, while Hayes’ knock came off only 45 balls, with 11 sixes and five fours.
Viljoen and Hayes added exactly 250 for the fourth wicket in 15.4 overs.
The highest total registered by Greenfield’s first team prior to yesterday’s brilliant effort was 335 for seven.
“It was good fun out there,” remarked 27-year-old Namibian all-rounder Viljoen. “I also got 50 in the win over Kendal (for Blackpool in the Northern league) on Saturday, so it’s been a pretty good weekend.”
Viljoen was brought in as deputy pro in place of Tinashe Panyangara, who remains tied up with the Zimbabwe international team.
Unbelievably, Shaw was on top at one stage and had reduced Greenfield to 20 for three!
There were plenty of runs in three of the other five first-round ties. Leaders Saddleworth totalled 252 for eight at second-placed Moorside. The hosts could only manage a disappointing 129.
Friarmere produced a great performance, 270-5, to beat Wythenshawe by five wickets.
Glodwick made a match-winning score of 307 for eight at Droylsden, who succumbed to 123 all out.
Windies overseas amateur Alton Beckford took for seven as Micklehurst swept aside Uppermill by nine wickets at Castle Lane, and Austerlands secured a comfortable eight-wicket victory at home to South West Manchester.
