Angling: FAILSWORTH angler Ken Power won the Middlewich teams of four Spring League match on the Trent and Mersey Canal and the Shropshire Union Canal.

On the end peg on the Middlewich wides (Trent and Mersey), the Tri-Cast Highfield rod used worm for lots of bream and a few big roach in a 20lb 3oz 8drams net.

Ged Martin (Tri-Cast Highfield) guested for Trafford. He was the runner-up with a cracking net of good roach (9lb 3oz), which fell to hemp and caster down the track and across from his peg on the Shropshire Union canal.

Ted Carter Southport led the way in the team standings with 39 points, followed by Wigan MG (35pts).

The Southport lads are in pole position (145 pts) with one week to go, followed by Team Guinness (131pts).

KEITH Marshall, of Tri-Cast Calder, is on a roll. He won his fourth match on the trot in the Thornhill AC Saturday open on the Thornhill Canal. Marshall tempted two 3lb bream and some roach, skimmers and perch on the pole at six and 14 metres. Squatt and caster were the telling bait.

Newhey-based Simon Walton (Matrix Halifax), in second place, lost two big fish that could have won him the match. He had to settle for a 6lb 9oz catch taken on pinkie and caster.

ALAN Dunn and John Lees tied for top spot in an impressive Medlock Bridge AC open on the Park Lake.

Dunn was drawn on peg 28, where he fished swimfeeder and maggot for half-a-dozen f1s, as well as chub and skimmers for 14lb 3oz.

Lees also chose to use the tip and maggot, and again it was some decent f1s and silvers that made up his net.

Mick Molloy won Section ‘A’ (10lb 14oz) with Mick Tighe’s 9lb 3oz net was good enough for Section ‘B’

honours.

GRAHAM Broughton won the Partridge Lakes OAPs and disabled open. Opting to fish caster shallow at seven metres, he accounted for 72lb 4oz of f1s and carp.

Rochdale angler Martin Kershaw (Oldham Owls) was in second place, with pellet close to the margins catching 43lb 1oz of f1s and carp.

WHILE our veterans’ national team scandalously doesn’t get any funding, they aren’t moping. Matches and fund-raisers are in the diary to help the team to compete at this year’s World Championships.

The two-legged War of the Roses match is one event - the first leg was held on Partridge Lakes, where Adam Harman (Lancashire) registered an impressive 123lb 6oz net made up of carp and f1s on pellet and maggot fished in the margins and shallows respectively.

Team-mate Lee Addy had an 85lb 14oz bag, which included f1s on maggot fished down the track. Lancashire dominated the match — 1,487lb 8oz to Yorkshire’s 1,061lb 8oz. The event raised more than £1,000 for the national team.

TYLE Lodge again fished well for the latest of the Socials AC matches. The winner was Chris Woodrup, who put 43lb 12oz of ide, chub, roach and bream on to the scales. Long pole, caster, maggot and worm all tempted fish.

Steve Hamer was second, with his pole, corn and maggot fished long taking plenty of carp, skimmers, roach and chub for a 28lb 12oz net.
