FORMER Oldham prop Paul Highton helped make a 73-year-old rugby league fan’s dream come true.

Madge McGarry took part in the Rugby League Extra phone-in on BBC Radio Manchester A supporter of St Helens since she was 13, it was discovered later she had a car accident a year ago which left her housebound - and unable to watch her beloved Saints live.

When she mentioned her passion for Saints on air, sports presente Liam Bradford and Highton arranged to pick her up with her daughter Louise from home in Rochdale and take them to the Saints’ Super League match against Huddersfield Giants.

She said: “I never thought anything like this would come along for me. I’ve had such a wonderful time, a really wonderful time; I’ll never forget it.”

Highton was on the programme when Madge phoned in: “When she mentioned how she struggled to get to a match I was more than happy to get involved and help take her with the radio team. Rugby league has a family feel; stories like this are what it’s all about.”
