Roughyeds modest two-try hero

OLDHAM'S teenage new boy David Hewitt said the credit for his two debut tries at Gloucester should go to Josh Crowley and Danny Langtree.

"The forwards did the hard work, I just pushed up in support," said the 19-year-old half back, whose two first-half tries crowned his eventful entry into senior rugby as Roughyeds earned the win that was to take them back to the top of the league.

Hewitt is two weeks into a month-long loan from St Helens - but his stay should be extended to the end of the season.

"Not having played for so long, I was excited to get out there and to get my hands on the ball as soon as possible,” he said. "I had trained with the squad for a couple of weeks and that was a huge help. I thought I fitted in okay.

"It was good to score two tries, but they were down to the forwards. I just did what half-backs do and that was to back up when they made the break. I made a few mistakes in the kicking department, but I was always going to be a bit rusty because I hadn't played for a long time.”

Several players who picked up knocks will be assessed at training tonight as Roughyeds start their preparations for Sunday's home showdown against York City Knights - chasing their fifth win in a row.

Roughyeds are currently the division's top points scorers with 445, but York have the second-best defensive record having conceded only 186 - three more than North Wales Crusaders.
