Darren’s Dunn dilemma

DARREN Kelly has sounded a warning to Athletic’s rivals in Sky Bet League One — there is far more to come from David Dunn.

The class-act midfield man is a player Athletic’s boss says he is tempted to start with against Fleetwood tomorrow.

Dunn has shown in his two substitute appearances to date that he has lost none of the silky touches that graced the Premier League with Blackburn and Birmingham, also earning him an England cap.

Dunn (35) almost scored against Middlesbrough in a half-hour run-out that included a brilliant, dipping 40-yard volley which forced Tomas Mejias in the Boro goal to scramble back and tip over.

But while it is conceivable that Dunn could start tomorrow, Kelly says he has yet to fully hit his straps.

And given the impact he has made in such limited game-time to date, that’s an ominous sign for opponents.

“It is (tempting) and I am working with David on that,” said Kelly, when asked whether he would be throwing in Dunn from the start tomorrow.

“It is a case of managing him. He hasn’t had a pre-season, but he has got that quality in his locker — there is no doubt about that.

“The big thing is getting him to full fitness. Then we will see the true qualities.

“He showed class again (against Middlesbrough) and was unlucky not to score with a fantastic volley.”

One knock-on consequence of Dunn joining Athletic on a one-year deal is that George Green has yet to play a single minute for Athletic so far.

“George is an excellent player. He is a young boy and with lots of games coming up, he will get his opportunity. There is absolutely no doubt about that,” Kelly added.
