LIAM Kelly: supposed target of Lee Johnson’s Barnsley.
ATHLETIC manager Darren Kelly says he hasn’t been made aware of a swoop for his namesake and skipper.
A report in the Sheffield Star linked former boss Lee Johnson - in charge at Barnsley - with a summer bid for midfield orchestrator Liam Kelly.
Athletic’s new boss says there’s nothing more to the link than speculation, pointing out his own list of targets. Athletic captain Kelly (25) has two more years on his Oldham contract.
“I am aware of nothing on that and so there is nothing to comment on,” said Darren Kelly. “As I see it, he is a very good player and as with all top players, he will attract attention. He is my captain and I want to keep him.
“I want players here who have a pride in the badge and the jersey. Like every other club, we have our list of players. The season is over and there are a lot of rumours and talk. With no more games, people have to find something to talk about.”
Kelly hopes he will be in a position to announce new signings soon, but isn’t in any rush: “I don’t want to shoot myself in the foot by making promises,” he said.
Athletic are waiting to hear whether new contract offers to George Elokobi and Adam Lockwood will be accepted. Should Lockwood remain, he is likely to reprise his end-of-season role helping out with coaching as well as playing.
ATHLETIC have confirmed they will play Stirling Albion in a friendly on July 17. That comes at the end of a week at a training camp in Stirling which is likely also to feature a private game against another Scottish club.
