A KEY community green space could be secured for future generations as Saddleworth Parish Council considers seeking ownership.
Councillors have unanimously agreed to support in principle the transfer of Dawson’s Field, Scouthead, from Oldham Council to them. The move would ease concerns the site could be sold off at a future date, leaving the community without community land for local events.
The proposal, raised at a parish council meeting by Councillor Robert Knotts, envisages other potential community uses including music festivals, village fetes, sports days and car boot sales.
Councillors supported his plan and agreed to find out the costs involved before making a final decision.
Councillor Brian Lord said: “We have an opportunity to acquire something for the people of Saddleworth. I think we should do everything in our power to get this.”
David Needham, secretary of Scouthead and Austerlands Whit Friday Brass Band Contest, said: “A successful transfer should lead to greater use of the field by the general public and allow further community-organised events to take place.”
