OLDHAM Council has been given £3.16million to upgrade parts of the A62 and Oldham Way.

The Department for Transport awarded the money from its Local Highways Maintenance Challenge Fund, designed to help improve local transport links.

The authority will also add £840,000 from its own capital programme towards the project, which will include structural repairs to the Oldham Way bridge over Middleton Road, and road resurfacing.

Councillor Dave Hibbert, Cabinet member for housing, planning and transport, said: “I’m pleased Oldham Council has successfully won funding for what are two very important local schemes.

“Both the A62 and Oldham Way are important to commuters and the local economy and the success of our bid will bring future benefits for growth and development.”
