A popular couple have won their fight to maintain a post office described as the centre of the community.

Sub-postmaster Paul Borg and his business partner, Janet Waite, have run the post office in Huddersfield Road, Diggle, for seven years, building up a successful business in the process.

But locals feared the post office would close when the shop was marked for sale.

The determined couple won the day and bought the premises to ensure its future.

Paul (34) said: “There were several people interested in taking the place over but they would definitely not have kept it as a post office.

“The problem is there are no other suitable premises in Diggle for a post office so Janet and I decided to have a go and we raised the cash and bought it at auction.

“It’s been a very tense few months,” he confessed. “But now the place is definitely ours we are just telling our customers the post office and other facilities we have build up are here to stay.

“It’s a great relief — and we have been very touched by the kindness showed by our customers who are really pleased we are both staying.”

Janet said: “Small businesses like these have a great loyalty factor; we’re proud to be part of the community.”
