Legend of the decks is back

AN OLDHAM DJ who penned one of the biggest dance anthems of all time has taken up residency at a town-centre nightclub.

DJ Kuta, aka Mike Lewis from N-Trance, will be spinning the decks every Saturday night at Liquid — just yards from where his career first began.

His most famous song, “Set You Free”, is still regularly found in the iTunes chart, and Mike, originally from Lees, has travelled the world with his music, DJ-ing in major dance destinations including Ibiza.

But settled in Prestatyn, he will now commute back to his roots for a regular slot in his hometown every weekend.

The 47-year-old said: “The club was taken over by a new manager and he phoned me asking if I fancied giving them a hand.

“I’ve not had a club residency in 20 years! I jumped at the chance. It’ll be great being back in Oldham again.”

He went on to explain that he first started out as a DJ at Oldham’s Trax Roller Rink and at Butterflies, Scandals and Jackson’s nightclubs.

He became a DJ on Sunset Radio and in 1994, with N-Trance, released “Set You Free”, which he says has been in the iTunes chart almost continuously ever since.

It reached number two in the charts in 1994 — beaten to the top spot by Celine Dion — and was re-released in 2001, when it reached number four.

It has also been used as the theme tune on a series of adverts for clothing store, Matalan.

Mike, who also lived in Hollinwood, continued: “Set You Free” was born in Butterflies.

“It’s the first place it was ever played.’

Mike’s set, part of the Sound of Saturday, will be held between 11pm and 3.30am at Liquid nightclub. He will be away this weekend on a guest slot elsewhere, but will be returning on Saturday, December 1.
