The jam buster
Date published: 26 July 2012
A BUS engineer took drastic action to prevent further rush-hour chaos through Oldham town centre today.
Traffic came to a grinding halt at 7am on the diversion between Union Street and Rhodes Bank — when a First bus got stuck in Bridge Street.
A mechanical failure meant the bus could only go forward — so when the driver tried to reverse to clear a road sign obstacle, she got stuck.
Buses backed up towards Mumps and with the clock ticking, a chaotic rush hour looked likely.
But the bus had to get through and one of First’s engineers came up with a simple solution — drive into the sign.
The bus pushed the sign over and ripped it out of the ground, taking off its own front spoiler in the process, But the jam quickly cleared.
The bus company is now investigating the incident.
