THE fire-ravaged Maple Mill has finally been fully demolished, which may come to the relief of nearby residents who have witnessed anti-social behaviour on the site.
The Chronicle has previously reported on past incidents at the former mill in Cardwell Street, including reports of neighbours seeing children climbing on top of the mill.
The building, in Hathershaw, was demolished after a huge blaze - deliberately ignited - ripped through it on December 16 last year and burned for nine days.
Councillor Barbara Brownridge, cabinet member for neighbourhoods and co-operatives, said: "Following last year's huge fire at Maple Mill we've been continually monitoring the site. Checks on the two remaining mill towers determined they were structurally unsound and needed to be demolished.
"The tower at the Cardwell Street end of the site was demolished on June 22 with the remaining tower at the Dowry Street end more recently knocked down.
"Nearby residents have been kept informed about our plans and those that have had to vacate their homes for the day while the work was carried out have been assisted throughout the process."
