Hirst signs two-year contract extension

Date published: 04 October 2023

George Hirst has committed his future to Roughyeds after signing a two-year extension with the club.

Hirst becomes the first member of the 2023 squad to sign on the dotted line after an impressive season for Roughyeds as the club looks to build on its fourth-placed finish.

The second-rower went from strength to strength, after making the step up to League One, with his performances earning him third place in the recent Supporters’ Player of the Year award.

After signing from Almondbury Spartans, of the Yorkshire Men’s League, Hirst went on to make 16 appearances and crossed the line three times in 2023.

The first try of his professional career came in the 56-4 victory over Cornwall when he was named in the starting line-up for the first time back in May.

Following that game, he established himself as a consistent name on the teamsheet, starting in all but two of the club’s matches across the remainder of the season.

Batley-born Hirst played for Dewsbury Moor and Celtic during his amateur days and represented England at under-19 level for the Community Lions against Scotland, Wales and Australia, before signing for Oldham.

Putting pen to paper was a no-brainer for Hirst who is excited and primed to go for the upcoming 2024 season.

“I didn’t really consider any other clubs; I think Oldham are going places with the players that have been brought in as well as all the effort and time that is being put into the club behind the scenes,” he said.

“Playing at Boundary Park last season was a really enjoyable experience and probably one of the best games I’ve played in.

“I wanted to be at a club that feels professional and I think that Oldham is that place.”
