Latics thwarted by late Maidenhead leveller

A late equaliser from Maidenhead United's Brad Keetch denied Latics a win.

The 1-1 outcome dented Latics' rise towards the National League play-off places.

Latics had made two changes from the weekend draw at Wealdstone with Mark Shelton and Kurt Willoughby dropping to the bench and James Norwood and Josh Lundstram coming in.

For Lundstram, it was his full league debut.

For most of the evening, it looked like another win was on the cards for interim manager Steve Thompson, who is now unbeaten in his first five matches.

Alex Reid, who has scored in four of those games, put Latics ahead on 28 minutes

Latics had started the game well and on the front foot with a crisp passing display during an impressive first half.

Their efforts were rewarded close to the half hour mark when Mark Kitching crossed from the left and Reid converted to keep up his incredible scoring sequence under Thompson.

Latics continued to press in a first half they dominated with several half chances, but were unable to add to their lead by the break, something they would rue by the end of the match.

Maidenhead grew in confidence as the game wore on and increasingly made their mark on the game.

Eventually Keetch, who had come on as a second half substitute for David Omilabu on 74 minutes, levelled the scores with a wonder goal which bulleted in from 25 yards with just two minutes of normal time remaining, to disappoint the majority of the 5,386 fans.

The result leaves Latics in 11th place in the National League table.

This Saturday they host Dagenham and Redbridge at Boundary Park, before facing a tough FA Cup fourth qualifying round game at local rivals Altrincham the following weekend.
