'Fantastic' Latics hit back to sink leaders Newport

Harry Kewell saluted a ‘fantastic win’ as his improving Latics team triumphed 4-2 in breath-taking style at League Two leaders Newport County.

Latics’ superb away form continued as they hit back from 2-1 behind at the interval to condemn Newport to their first home defeat of the season.

“It’s a fantastic win and I always felt we had the opportunity to score goals,” beamed Kewell.

“I could only see one team winning once we got the third.

“We are playing good football and winning brings so much joy.

“The changing room is buzzing.

“This is a nice Christmas present for the fans, but there is still a long way to go.”

The Exiles twice took the lead through a fierce Scott Twine effort and then Scot Bennett's swivel and low shot.

But each time Latics replied, with Davis Keillor-Dunn sliding the ball in before Conor McAleny's 30-yard strike.

Padraig Amond then missed a penalty for Newport before Alfie McCalmont and Zach Dearnley goals gave Latics victory.

Latics climbed to 14th, and are back in action on Saturday – Boxing Day – when they host EFL new boys Harrogate Town.
