Oldham Athletic lose out to Burton Albion in FA Cup

Date published: 02 December 2019

Liam Boyce sent Burton Albion into the third round of the FA Cup with the only goal of the game against Oldham Athletic.

Despite a barrage of late pressure from the hosts, Latics were unable to find a goal to earn a replay.

The Brewers almost struck early on when Kieran Wallace's shot was only saved at the second attempt by Zeus De La Paz.

The League One side went in front midway through the first half when Colin Daniel crossed in low for Boyce, who tucked home from four yards.

David Templeton fired inches over for Burton before the visitors were saved by the woodwork in first-half stoppage time. Jonny Smith twisted and turned before seeing his low drive pushed onto the post by keeper Kieran 'O'Hara.

Smith forced O'Hara into another decent stop soon after the restart.

Oldham were pressing hard for a leveller, and Alex Iacovitti fluffed a great chance when he volleyed straight at O'Hara from 10 yards.

O'Hara was then controversially yellow-carded late on as he handled outside his area after rushing out to meet Tom Hamer's ball forward.
