Oldham Athletic have signalled their desire to keep hold of want away defender George Edmundson, doubling the asking price.

The Oldham Evening Chronicle understands Latics’ owner Abdallah Lemsagam won’t listen to offers of less than £1 million for the 21-year old and is prepared to dig his heels in and demand the former academy product returns to the club for pre-season training at the start of July.

In a saga which has rumbled on since the end of the season back in May, Edmundson has been the subject of interest from a number of higher-level clubs, although the team most keen on securing his services appears to be former Scottish Champions Rangers.

The Glasgow based side have had three bids, believed to be £400,000, £500,000 and £600,000, all turned down by bosses at Boundary Park.

Now we can reveal the Ibrox club will have to dig even deeper into their pockets if they want to bag the talented young centre back.

It’s even got to the stage where Edmundson held talks with Lemsagam asking to be allowed to leave the club, however he was told that will only happen if their valuation is met.

The 21-year old, who impressed during his 54-appearances for the club last season, has one year left to run on his current contract and has turned down an improved deal to stay at the League Two side.

However, The Oldham Evening Chronicle understands Mr Lemsagam would be prepared to allow the defender to run his contract down and let him leave the club at the end of next season on a free transfer, although Latics would be owed some compensation, rather than cash in during the current off-season.
