Oldham Athletic could be set for a fight this summer if they want to keep hold of one of their young stars as a whole host of Football League clubs are understood to be tracking George Edmundson.

According to the Football Insider, the 21-year old defender has caught the eye of Sunderland and Preston North End after impressing with his performances this season.

Edmundson, who has come through the academy at Boundary Park, had several loan spells at clubs such as Ramsbottom United and Alfreton Town before breaking into Latics’ senior side and has impressed to such an extent that he was recently voted into the League Two team of the year.

So far this season Edmundson has appeared in 52 games for the club, scoring twice in the process.

Along with Sunderland and Preston, Stoke City are also said to be interested in Edmundson who still has a year to run on his current contract.

However, that’s not thought to be putting clubs off watching the 21-year old with Oldham braced for a battle to keep him at the club beyond the end of this season.
