Relive 'Graceland' with the amazing London African Gospel Choir

Date published: 25 September 2018

Every venue that puts tickets on sale, sells out in an instant...! Last year, all eight shows the Jazz Cafe put on sale hit capacity, receiving rave reviews.

Now, 30 years after its release, the 19 members of the London African Gospel Choir, together with their amazing band, perform their own powerful twist on Paul Simon’s ‘Graceland’, from start to finish.

The Choir head into Manchester to play their spectacular show on Saturday, November 3, at the Academy 2.

After coming across a bootleg cassette of South African township music in the early 80s, Paul Simon was totally smitten by the infectious and irresistible rhythms.

He travelled to Johannesburg, spending two weeks there, recording with the absolute cream of South African musicians.

That epic session went on to form the basis of Simon’s most commercially successful album ever – Graceland.

The record became a true global phenomenon, winning Grammys in both 1987 and 88, shifting five million copies Stateside and then another 2.5 million copies in the UK alone and spawning the hit singles, ‘Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes’, ‘The Boy in the Bubble’ and it’s biggest smash – ‘You Can Call Me Al.’

The richness and harmony of the Choir’s rhythmic, evocative and empowering, voices have created an overwhelming musical event, for anyone lucky enough to experience this special performance of Paul Simon’s Graceland.

What the people say: “What a life enhancing evening!”, “The most uplifting, energising evening I’ve had in years”, “So many great songs so beautifully performed with so much energy and so many happy smiles”, “It should be prescribed on the NHS”.

Academy 2 tickets, priced at £22.50, are now available from the Box Office No: 0161 832 1111.
