Oldham Academy North students give thanks to their teachers on World Teachers’ Day

Date published: 09 October 2023

Students at The Oldham Academy North (TOAN) in Oldham (part of E-ACT, a family of 28 academies) celebrated their teachers on World Teachers’ Day.

World Teachers’ Day is an annual event that has been running since 1994 and it marks the anniversary of the adoption of the 1966 ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers, which sets benchmarks regarding the rights and responsibilities of teachers, and standards for their initial preparation and further education, recruitment, employment, and teaching and learning conditions.

It is viewed as a day to not only celebrate the profession and the transformational power of education but also to consider the support they need to fully deploy their talent and to think about the future of the vocation on a global scale.

At TOAN, teachers received postcards from the Headteacher Jessica Giraud with a personalised message and students also filled out thank you cards with messages of gratitude.

Parents also contributed some messages, some of which are as follows:

"My child was over the moon to find she had Ms E for Spanish this year.

"She has always been so encouraging, not just with Spanish but also with my child's passion for musical theatre and her out of school projects.

"My daughter had Ms S as form tutor last year and she really helped keep her upbeat during a difficult year (mental health wise).

"My daughter still knows that Ms S would be there to talk to whenever she needs it, which is so comforting to know.

"Ms C has been one of my child's favourite teachers since they first spoke on the open evening when she was in year 6, and it was this conversation that ultimately led us to choosing TOAN for our child!

"She is so encouraging and approachable, she knows what my child wants to do in the future and is definitely equipping her with the skills they’ll need."

Head Ms Giraud said: “It was great to celebrate our teachers today.

"Teaching is not an easy job, but it is hugely rewarding, and it was brilliant to thank all our staff today for the very meaningful contribution they are making to the lives and futures of countless young people.”

Tom Campbell, CEO of E-ACT, said: “I was delighted to hear about the efforts TOAN went to mark World Teachers’ Day.

"It was great to hear that students made such an effort to let their teachers know they appreciate them.”
