Generous Alexandra Park children help keep foodbank stocked up

Date published: 27 September 2018

The Oldham Foodbank visited Alexandra Park Primary as part of the school's Harvest assemblies.

Foodbank staff talked about how the children should be thankful for what they have and how the foodbank helps people within Oldham.

As a surprise, the children have been collecting donations for the foodbank for the last two weeks, and they were presented during the assembly.

The school collected approximately 200 donations, with Year 3 children being especially generous, collecting half of them.

Zoe from the foodbank said: "Donations are always welcome, but especially at this time of year as we run low on stock after the summer.

"Then it's Christmas which is another busy time."

Alexandra Park's Samantha Hickling added: "It is fantastic to have so many donations from our children.

"They are always willing to help out those in need and it shows at times like this.

"The foodbank provide a vital service to all those in our community who are in need, and we are proud at Alexandra Park to support that each year.

"Really, they need more support to keep their vital service running.

"Well done to everyone for their kind donations."

When asked why it was important to help, Amna, from Year 5, said: "I think it is important to help the foodbank because its nice to help people who are homeless and it helps you think what it would be like.

"In England we have better facilities to help people.

"In some places in the world, they don't have the right to education, so they don't know about these problems."
