A good audience enjoyed an afternoon concert of French music at St Paul's Church in Royton.

Oldham Choral Society performed Poulenc's "Gloria" and Duruflé's "Requiem" - works which the Society Chairman Gerard Marsden described as "challenging"!

The choir's hard work, however, paid off, and the Gloria was very well done, with Duncan Robertson at the piano, and wonderful Soprano soloist Kerry Firth.

We were also treated to lovely solos by visually impaired Kerry and David Cane, the Society's Musical Director.

The second half of the programme, Duruflé's "Requiem", was even more challenging, as members of the choir admitted.

However, they rose to the challenge, and backed by Gary Hulme at the organ, they produced another outstanding performance.

Kerry's singing of the "Pie Jesu" movement was especially lovely.

The men's sections were somewhat overpowered by the ladies, possibly due to being so far back in the Chancel, but overall, the concert was a real treat, and all involved deserve congratulations for providing everyone with a very enjoyable afternoon - well worth braving the terrible weather!
