Springhead youngsters score funding for football kits and equipment

A team of local junior footballers will start the new year in style thanks to a donation towards new training kits and equipment from Redrow.

The housebuilder has provided £500 to Springhead AFC to buy new balls, bibs and cones, plus a training kit for each child attending its soccer school for four to seven-year-olds.

As a charity, the football club, based in Lees, raises funds throughout the year to help children develop their soccer skills.

Young player Charlie Kearney, seven, is one of the children to benefit from the new kit after his mum Felicity Kearney applied for sponsorship via Redrow’s Oldham Community Fund, which has shared a total of £5,000 between good causes that help people and communities in the Oldham area.

Felicity said: “The funding has been used to provide new kits and better equipment for Springhead AFC’s soccer school.

"The club is really dedicated to helping younger children gain confidence, make friends and learn new skills while playing a sport they love.

"We are very grateful to Redrow for their kind donation, which means so much to the children.

“They have not been able to train as much as they would have liked over the last year so they are looking forward to hopefully wearing their new kits again soon.”

Springhead AFC was formed in 1922 and the club currently has over 250 players and 30 qualified coaches.

Redrow Lancashire sales director Sian Pitt said: “Like many charities and community groups, grassroots sports has had a tough last year, so we are very pleased that Springhead AFC have been able to put the £500 funding towards new kits and equipment.

“We’re proud to be involved in the communities in which we build and Springhead AFC play a big part in supporting children in the area to development their sporting skills.”
