Nominations open for Oldham’s Stars awards

Date published: 17 May 2019

Nominations are now open to celebrate the achievements of Oldham’s children looked after and care leavers.

Oldham Council will host its annual Stars in Our Eyes awards ceremony in the Queen Elizabeth Hall on Friday 11 October.

The evening is an opportunity to celebrate the events, progress and achievements of our looked after children and care leavers – a chance for them to get together with their families, friends and peers to make positive memories.

There are more than 600 children looked after and care leavers across Oldham who are cared for through foster carers, residential homes, supported living or within a secure environment. Every one of them deserves celebrating.

This year the STARS categories are Sports and Leisure, Arts and Culture, Learning, Community, Health, Turnaround, Make a Difference and Environment.

Accomplishments can be varied ranging from gaining qualifications to overcoming significant health issues, excelling in their hobbies or improving behaviour.

Councillor Amanda Chadderton, Cabinet Member for Children’s Services said: “This is an extremely important event in Oldham Council’s calendar to celebrate the achievements of our children looked after and care leavers.

“The role the council plays in looking after children and young people is one of the most important things we do, creating a place where children and young people feel safe, happy and can thrive.

“Every child deserves to be celebrated and as corporate parents we take this very seriously.

“I’d urge all social workers, teachers, carers and family members to nominate their star. No matter how small you think the achievement may be, it might be of huge importance to the child or young person.”

Anyone, for example; a professional, carer, school or family member, can nominate a child or young person and they can do so by visiting www.oldham.gov.uk/stars19.

Nominations close on Friday, 21 June, 2019.
