Lucy, Balsan and Luke are this year's Oldham students of the year

Date published: 22 July 2020

The Rotary Club of Oldham has announced the winners of the 2020 Oldham Student of the Year Awards.

The Student of the Year in the 16+ age group is Lucy Bowden from Hulme Grammar School.

The runner-up in that age group is Megan Bruton, from Oldham Sixth Form College.

The joint Students of the Year in the 11-16 age group are Balsan Irfan, from the Blue Coat School, and Luke Goodall, from E-Act Royton and Crompton Academy.

The Club usually announces the results in May following presentations in the Council Chamber at the Civic Centre in the presence of the Mayor.

However, the Covid virus intervened in the process and so with the help of all the participating schools, officials are now able to announce the results.

The 2020 Oldham Student of the Year Awards is sponsored by the Rotary Club of Oldham, Merinox Tubing Specialists of Oldham and the Oldham Sixth Form College.

A Rotary Club spokesperson said: "This has been a very challenging year for all involved in education, and the Rotary Club members and especially those involved in these awards are very grateful for the support given to us and to the nominated students.

"As a club, we have had to change the way we dealt with the awards and so we found it extremely gratifying when we received so many nominations which were of an extremely high standard.

"The quality of nominations was very high and we were challenged by the variety of activities presented by the students who responded to personal challenges, family challenges and community challenges.

"The awards seek to recognise the outstanding contribution young people give to their school, to our local community and to family displaying one of the aims of Rotary, which is to encourage and foster the ideal of service."

All the winning students were presented with nomination certificates and winner/runner-up certificates, and also received vouchers from the sponsors.

The Rotary Club would like to thank the staff of all participating schools, academies and colleges for their support.
