Oldham MP reveals plan to open old path at Greenfield station to improve access

Date published: 29 July 2019

Oldham East and Saddleworth MP, Debbie Abrahams, undertook a site visit to Greenfield Station with Oldham Council to explore the possibility of re-opening an old path that used to lead on to the platform which is currently only accessible via a footbridge.

Debbie said, “I’ve visited Greenfield station many times before but only relatively recently found out about the old path. You can see from the brickwork, where the current waiting room is, alterations were made many years ago to the station. Originally this is where there used to be an old path leading to the platform.

Having been knocked back by the Government when we applied for ‘Access for All’ funding earlier in the year, we wanted to explore whether this was a way to make the station accessible for everyone.

The footbridge to the platform is incredibly difficult to use for anyone with mobility issues, as well as for people with small children and buggies.

I’m now arranging another visit with Northern who have responsibility for the station. If we can define options that are acceptable to the public and other stakeholders, I want us to apply to the Department for Transport’s for a grant under their re-launched All Mid-Tier programme. The inaccessibility of Greenfield station has to be addressed.”
