Oldham MP describes Crime Crisis in Greater Manchester as a 'national disgrace'

Date published: 18 July 2019

Oldham West and Royton MP Jim McMahon blasted the government today over the “Crime Crisis” he says the government has created in Greater Manchester.

This is following a statement from Greater Manchester’s chief of police where he said “around 1,000 crimes a day are recorded in Greater Manchester but 60% of these are screened out following very basic investigations”.

Jim McMahon MP has responded to this, saying “We are facing a crime crisis and it’s not happened by accident”
Continuing on to say “Everyday 600 crimes are reported but are not even investigated in Greater Manchester, that’s 60% of all crimes.

Worrying still are that because crimes are not investigated, residents will now talk about the need for private security to fill in the gap, potentially breaking down the future relationship of the foundation of how we Police in Britain; by consent and public support."

This inability of the police to fully investigate and act on crimes has been put down to the 80% reduction in the police budget, despite increased funds from Council Tax rises, senior members of Greater Manchester Police are recognising that the cuts have been to deep and far reaching to allow them to protect the public as they need too.

Following this, Jim said “This is a national disgrace. The Government have systematically and ideologically underfunded key and core parts of our national infrastructure. They have crippled the police and our NHS. They are at breaking point, and this is leading to a rise in crime, with emergency services unable to react.”

Jim McMahon MP is pushing for the government to stop this crippling of our police service, and with rising crime, such as Knife Crime, which is at record levels, it now seems to be a matter of public protection to give the police the tools and resources they need to do their jobs.
