Six prosecuted after waste dumped across Oldham

The people who left the waste have now all been successfully prosecuted by Oldham Council.

The following cases were heard at Tameside Magistrates’ Court on 31st January.

Caroline Haywood, 32, of Pearl Mill Close pleaded guilty to a duty of care after her waste was found fly tipped at the back of her street. She was fined £200 with £250 costs with a £30 victim surcharge.

Mirela Saven, 31 of Ralstone Avenue Oldham pleaded guilty to the same offence after waste was found dumped in the alley at the side of Villa Road in May last year. She was fined £220 with £220 costs plus a £30 victim surcharge. 

Litter found in a car park was traced to Ian Tierney, 31 of Watergate Milne Court and he was ordered to pay a Fixed Penalty Notice of £80. He failed to pay the fine and attend court when he was summonsed.  He was found guilty in his absence of a littering offence and was fined £220 with £406 costs and a £30 victim surcharge.

Mario Dioll, of Crofton Street, failed to attend court and was found guilty in his absence of a littering offence. He was handed a fine of £220 with £406 costs and a £30 victim. He had originally been issued with an FPN after waste was found in Nield Street in June last year.

An FPN was issued to Lozefina Biban, 28 of Garforth St, Oldham after rubbish was found near her home address in September last year. She failed to pay the fined or attend court. She was found guilty in her absence and fined £220 with £406 costs plus a £30 victim surcharge.

Rubbish discovered in an alley at the rear of Kingsbridge Road in July last year was traced to Lavinia Sorica, 24 of Kingsbridge Road. She was issued with an FPN for littering but failed to pay it and attend court. She was found guilty in her absence and fined £220 with £406 costs and a £30 victim surcharge.

Councillor Arooj Shah, Deputy Leader of Oldham Council and Cabinet Member for Neighbourhood Services, said: “It’s a disgrace that some people think they can get away with dumpling rubbish and litter on our streets – leaving others to clear up after them.

“It’s not the council dumping the rubbish and we don’t have the resources or the money to drive around our borough picking up waste that people have dumped.

“If we get evidence of who is responsible we will take action.

“Everyone needs to do their bit. Thankfully the vast majority of you don’t fly-tip and litter but for this problem to go away we need the selfish few to stop.”

You can take excess waste to Arkwright Street Waste and Recycling Centre, Oldham OL9 9LZ free of charge.

If you pay someone to take your waste ask to see their waste carriers licence, this is a card issued by the Environment Agency and get them to give you a receipt for the waste taken and their name and contact details. If you are not sure do not pass your waste on because if it found dumped, you will face legal action.
