A deal to deliver affordable homes as part of the £100m Broadway Green development has been confirmed.

Countryside plans to build 140 new homes at the Broadway Green site in Chadderton.

Once completed, the £100m Broadway Green scheme - a joint venture between Oldham Council, Grasscroft Property and Seddon - will provide up to 500 new homes and more than 600,000sqft of employment space within a premium business park.

Developer Redrow is already on site building 97 new family homes, with the first phase to be completed in February 2019.

Work to construct a new link road through the site is also underway and is set to be completed by the spring of 2020.

In total, the project will create 2,000 new jobs and an estimated £4.6m annual boost to the local retail economy.

It will also generate more than £850,000 every year in additional Council Tax income.

Cllr Sean Fielding, Leader of Oldham Council, said: “I’m delighted to have Countryside Properties on-board with what is a key regeneration project for Oldham.

“More than 4,000 people in Oldham are in housing need and they’re living in unsuitable, overcrowded or unfit homes or have no homes at all. This is something we need to put right.

“Good quality, affordable housing really is the bedrock of a thriving borough. The shortage of good quality, affordable housing means that too many children don’t have a safe place to sleep at night.

"It means that they don’t have a quiet room to study in so they can get the most out of school.

“By having more good quality homes, coupled with the creation of more jobs, we are creating a better place for people to live and work. Not just for Oldhamers but for people looking at Oldham as a place they want to move to.

“The Broadway Green development truly underpins exactly what we need for Oldham.

"To move forward we need more job opportunities as well as aspirational and affordable homes. This site is set to deliver on all of this.

“With its strategic location near the M60 and M62 the Business Park signals that our borough is truly open for business and will act as a catalyst for wider economic growth, attracting new people and businesses to the area.”

John Grealis, Regional Operations Director at Countryside, commented: “We are very pleased to be playing a key part in the ambitious development plans at Broadway Green and to be contributing to Oldham Council’s strategy to bring more high quality new homes to the town.

“Countryside are experts in understanding the needs of the communities in which we build and delivering diverse neighbourhoods that offer something for everyone.

"We have worked closely with Oldham Council to ensure that our new development will offer a broad variety of tenures, including homes for open market sale, shared ownership and affordable rent.

"We very much look forward to commencing work on the homes and welcoming local people to this fantastic new development."
