A post office in Oldham is in the running for a Rural Oscar.

Diggle Post Office, on Huddersfield Road in Diggle, is hoping to walk away with one of the prestigious awards.

The shortlist of finalists for the North West has been announced for the Countryside Alliance Awards.

Businesses will go head-to-head for a regional title and the winners will get a shot at national glory.

It’s the yearly celebration of rural produce, skills, enterprise and heritage – and the awards are now in their 13th year.

More than 17,000 nominations were received this year, across five categories.

They are: Local food and drink, village shop or post office, butcher, rural enterprise, and pub.

Diggle Post Office is up against Braithwaite Stores in Keswick, Sutton General Store and Post Office in Macclesfield, and Witherslack Community Shop in Grange-Over-Sands.

Countryside Alliance Awards Director Sarah Lee said: “We received a record breaking 17,000 nominations this year showing just how much the public values and supports our hard-working rural businesses.

“All of the finalists should be really proud to have gotten this far as it shows just how valued they are in their rural communities.

“The Countryside Alliance is honoured to offer a voice to rural business in this way and recognise all the hard work that is done.

“I look forward to getting out and visiting these fantastic businesses as judging gets underway.”
