Where do residents in Oldham stand on whether there should be a people's vote on Brexit?

YouGov polled almost 26,000 people to get their opinions on whether they would like to be given the final say on the outcome of the government’s Brexit negotiations.

Each of the 27 constituencies in Greater Manchester support a people’s vote.

In Oldham East and Saddleworth, 57.9 per cent of respondents were in favour of another vote – while that figure was slightly higher in Oldham West and Royton, up to 60.5 per cent.

The study was done nationwide.

Meanwhile, to help Oldham, Saddleworth, Royton and Shaw businesses prepare for Brexit, local MPs Debbie Abrahams and Jim McMahon, along with Leader of Oldham Council Sean Fielding, will be co-hosting a listening event in conjunction with the Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce on November 22.

That will be at Hack on Yorkshire Street, from 4.45-6.30pm.

Mrs Abrahams, who represents Oldham East and Saddleworth, said: “The purpose of this event is to listen to businesses about their concerns about Brexit to see how we can best help them, be it at a local or national level.”

Mr McMahon, MP for Oldham West and Royton, said: “Brexit is going to be a potentially challenging process for Oldham businesses to navigate – a process made worse by the uncertainty surrounding the Government and Parliament.

"This is on top of the pressures already bearing down on small business and the high street, compounded by the Government’s lack of support.

"Working together in a local cross-sector partnership is a key starting point to turning fortunes around.”  

Mr Fielding added: “Under my leadership the council is making great progress to make Oldham the place we all know it can be.

"Crucial to this ambition, however, is a thriving local economy.

"So we must do all we can to make sure local businesses owners have all the help and support they need to deal with the uncertainty and challenges Brexit may bring.

“Our message is, if you own, or are a part of a business, and are concerned about the impact Brexit may have, please book your place and come along and join in the discussion.”

This free event is open to all businesses across Oldham, Shaw, Royton and Saddleworth and will be held at Hack, 38-44 Yorkshire Street, Oldham OL1 1SE from 4.45-6.30pm.

Light refreshments from 4.45pm will be followed by roundtable debate and discussion from 5pm-6.30pm.
