The people of Oldham remember - 100 years on
Date published: 12 November 2018
Thousands of Oldhamers gathered at various services yesterday to pay respect to those who gave their lives for their country.
Tens of thousands of men, women and children lost their lives during the First World War in particular, and in subsequent conflicts, either on the battlefield or on the home front.
Here in Oldham we suffered significant losses and remembrance services are held each year to acknowledge this.
In Oldham town centre, crowds lined the streets to watch parades of veterans, military servicemen, women and cadets as they marched through the town centre before gathering at the cenotaph and on Parliament Square for an outdoor Remembrance Sunday.
The day of Remembrance - which also marked 100 years since the end of World War One - featured numerous other services across Oldham, held in conjunction with the Royal British Legion.
The people of Chadderton were out in force at the War Memorial in the Old Town Hall gardens, while the Crompton War Memorial was also very busy.
There were similar scenes at processions and services in Failsworth, Lees, Royton, Bardsley, Dobcross, Uppermill and Waterhead.
As well as those annual district services, there are lots of other events taking place this year.
These include an exhibition being held at Gallery Oldham called ‘Stories of Sacrifice’ – running from November 5 to December 1 – which is a special touring exhibition dedicated to the bravery and sacrifice of Muslim soldiers who fought for Britain during the First World War.

Meanwhile, lots of Oldham scooterists were out braving the cold as they took part in the annual Manchester and Salford Ride of Remembrance.
Hundreds of Vespas and Lambrettas were ridden to the Salford War Memorial after the remembrance service at the Manchester Cenotaph.
