surrounded: Higginshaw’s Gareth Bradley has nowhere to go in the face of a formidable Golborne defence.
RUGBY:
HIGGINSHAW made a promising start against a strong Golborne Parkside outfit in their latest North-West Counties League clash on Oldham Edge.
The hosts held their own in the first 20 minutes, before the Warrington team assumed command to take a 36-0 victory.
Chris Yarwood, Luke Makin and Jack Hughes constantly drove back the Golborne players in the opening exchanges.
Higgy enjoyed a 10-minute spell when they were camped on the visitors’ line, but chances to score went begging.
Man-of-the-match Martyn Swaine probed and tested the Golborne defence as both sides made the best of the terrible conditions.
Golborne went in after 20 minutes with a try from Liam Prescott, but back came Higgy with Andy O’Donnell and Gareth Brindley going close.
Nathan Currie extended his side’s lead on the half-hour, while at the other end, big loose forward Yarwood was stopped on the line.
With the score 8-0 at the break, there was still everything to play for. Higgy continued to cause problems for Golborne with Daryl Renshaw, Paul Turner and Hayden Jones denied with the line beckoning.
But Golborne stepped up a gear, scoring three tries in 12 minutes. Further scores from Currie and Craig Ashall gave the final score an unfair reflection of the game.
