We got a bit giddy, admits Latics boss

PAUL Dickov admitted his Athletic side lost focus in what was at one stage a rousing performance against higher-division opponents last night.

Goals from debut-making striker Jordan Slew and Jean-Yves Mvoto had Athletic two goals up at half-time against Sheffield Wednesday in the televised Capital One Cup first-round tie.

But the visitors from South Yorkshire, who missed with a first-half penalty, flipped the game on its head by winning 4-2 in the end.

Wednesday emerged a far more purposeful unit for the second period to smash home four goals.

Lessons will be learned, Dickov believes, ahead of the npower League One opener at MK Dons on Saturday.

“It was a game of two halves and we started well,” said Dickov, of a game watched from the main stand by Dons boss Karl Robinson.

“Then we got a bit giddy. We lost our shape without the ball and stopped passing it as we had done.

“I said to the boys whether it was the first game or the 31st, we have to learn from it and we have to better ourselves.”
